It’s time to ask… R U OK?

13 September 2018

It’s R U OK? Day, a national day of action to remind us to ask “are you ok?” to those around us, be it at home, work, or when we are out and about.

Did you know that…

  • 2,866 Australians died by suicide in 2016. That’s about 8 people every day.
  • For every death by suicide, it’s estimated 30 people will attempt to take their life.
  • 89% of people report knowing someone who has attempted suicide.
  • Males account for 75% of deaths by suicide.

R U OK? encourages everyone to invest more quality time in the people around them because when our relationships are strong, we’re more likely to see the signs that someone may be struggling and are better placed to start a meaningful conversation with that person.

If you’re worried about someone and don’t know how to navigate a conversation to find out how they’re doing and how you can support them, then follow these four steps.

How to ask 4 steps

By reaching out as early as possible, the more likely the outcome will be a positive one.
